Manchester United defender Jonny Evans - rape incident
A Manchester United player was released on bail after being arrested today in connection with an allegation of rape in a hotel where the club held its Christmas party.
Jonny Evans, age 19, defender, was presented during the interrogation and last night took place during the night at a police station in Manchester. Evans, who joined United in July 2004, was interviewed again today, and were thought to have cooperated fully with the police. The arrest occurred after 26 years, alleges she was raped at the hotel Great John Street in Manchester in the early hours of Tuesday. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Evans has been bailed until February 23. The investigation will take place”. Evans, who was born in Belfast, but went to school in the sale, made three appearances for United, most recently during the last week of the Champions League game against Roma. He made his international debut for Northern Ireland in the 3-2 over Spain last September.
United has reserved all 30 hotel rooms for the party, which was attended by 150 people. The hotel, a converted Victorian school, has a rooftop spa and suites, which cost as much as £ 395 per night. The party began to 2pm on Monday when players traveled by bus from their Carrington training complex for 235 casinos in the city center. The show then continued at the hotel for lunch and a show by drag queens and burlesque dancers.
During the evening, the party headed towards the old part Grapes pub belonging to the Coronation Street actress Liz Dawn, and the football players were heard singing songs before leaving at 9.30pm. Some players also briefly went to a strip club in the city while the rest of the party continued to drink at the hotel. The party is understood in advance went to the approval of the reluctant United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who had warned players to be on their best behavior after problems in recent years. Last year the club’s Christmas party was held at the same hotel where the glasses were vandalized and damaged floor at a cost of £ 41000.
