MySpace Users Make Movie Adaptation
Paulo Coelho, a best-selling Brazilian novelist, is teaming up with MySpace to make a film adaptation of one of his books that will be made almost entirely by MySpace users! The book in question is “The Witch of Portobello“.
Reluctant to allow his novels to be translated to film, Coelho feels this particular story is most appropriate for the medium, especially in the manner it will be made. In the book, 15 characters narrate the story throughout, each interacting and interpreting the main character, Athena.
In this unique endeavor, Coelho has invited filmmakers from across the world to interpret these narratives and submit them to his MySpace account. These individual directors will handle the script, casting and other elements of their short, while the whole piece, which will end up being a 52 minute TV movie, will be edited and put together by a professional.
Those filmmakers whose narrations are selected will receive kudos from the esteemed author, but also a check for $4,638 (Euro 3,000). Musicians are also invited to submit music for the soundtrack.
Chris DeWolfe, CEO of MySpace said, ““Paulo’s decision to reach out to the global MySpace community is a powerful reflection on both the power of collaboration and the creativity of our users…”
Submissions will be accepted from June 16th to July 25th, then an independent jury will select winners to be announced on August 24th, which is Coelho’s birthday.
