NY Times Article Purchased for Film
Paramount has purchased a New York Times article titled “Mystery on Fifth Avenue” for a feature film that will be directed by JJ Abrams (Cloverfield) says The Hollywood Reporter (THR). Abrams will produce the film through his Bad Robot shingle of Paramount.
The article, which was also featured on Yahoo.com at the time (you now have to login to the NY Times website to access the article), ran last Thursday, June 12th and was written by Penelope Green. It describes an actual Upper East Side luxury apartment on Fifth Avenue that was designed to have secret passages and hidden compartments everywhere including in the furniture. Contained within these hidden places are games, puzzles, clues, etc. to entertain the owners’ four pre-teen children.

The designer, Eric Clough, was hired by parents Steven Klinsky and Maureen Sherry - who are both Wall Street financial experts - to transform their spacious and average (by Upper East Side luxury apartment standards) living space into something unique. They weren’t fully aware of Clough’s mad genius plans until after the fact.
Abrams’ next big film is his version of a revived “Star Trek” and he also has the television show “Fringe” hitting Fox this fall. But this NY Times article turned mystery movie should be an interesting departure and a unique concept whenever it may hit the big screen.
