Samsung Q1: Ultra Mobile PC
I must admit that I am not convinced that the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) category of devices, each company. From the minute I saw prototypes of these devices start to appear, the UMPC only to be a solution to a problem that does not really exist. Is there really a need for a device that sits between an ultra portable notebook and a fully-equipped PDA? I am not so sure. But despite my lack of confidence in the UMPC, I am a real sucker for cool gadgets, so I tried to check my paws on a Samsung Q1 despite my reservations.
The jury is not whether Microsoft Ultra mobile PC (UMPC) Form Factor is the next step in the evolution of mobile computing, or just a development impasse embedded somewhere between notebooks, PDAs and PMPs. For now, all we can do is whether the judges of the first generation of hardware can actually cut it as a portable PC, and since Samsung was the first launch of such a product, it is in the dock today…
In the traditional fashion Engadget caught after shots, screen images, and even a proper hands on before the device is announced, we can Samsung’s Q1. Let’s call it a ultramobile PC, call it Origami, whatever, it is a 779g (1.7 pound) 9 x 5.5 1 x mini-inch tablet with a 7 inch LCD touch screen, Celeron M ULV processor, 40GB hard drive, 512 MB RAM, 802.11b/g Bluetooth 2.0, GPS and DMB options (of course), and Windows XP Tablet with Touch Pack. We still do not yet know a price or expected release on this, so expect yet another post on the Q1 in the near future, or at least an update to this one.
